Our thinking can impact the behavior of others, because others may feel perceived or judged by our thoughts. If others feel judged by a large enough group, it may pressure them to not perform the behavior that they think elicited that judgement from others. The thinking of others may also influence our thinking in a similar way. We may feel pressured to conform to the way others think or we may feel intimidated to voice our thoughts and view them as wrong. 2. One factor that plays a role in person perception is appearance. Appearance can tell us quite a bit about someone if we assume their physical traits to be a pattern. For example, one might perceive someone as religious if they consistently dress very conservatively, especially women. Appearance may also tell us about what a person lacks if they do not have a physical signal that most people do. For example, someone who does not have what is considered a neat haircut may be considered unkept or messy. 3. Jane Elliot's Blue Eyes experiment is illustrated in the insecurity and perceived inferiority that many people of color have faced in the past, and even continue to face today. There is a scene in a show that I have watched where a group of girls were play acting, and they forced the only girl of color to be their servant because she was darker than the rest of them, who were all white. The other girls verbalized that she should be the servant because she was tan, perfectly tying in with Jane Elliot's experiment. Chapter 8 Questions 1. The way we communicate has changed because it has primarily moved to digital means. This involves little to no context for tone, inflection or intent behind what is being said. For the most part these changes are negative, however there is one main positive change. This positive change is that communication is more instant and can be done across large distances. 2. One important feature of the communication process is the channel. The channel is responsible for how the message is sent. This can include tone, gestures, verbal or physical cues, and eye contact. These all have the potential to drastically change how the message is perceived. 3. One barrier to communication is ambushing, which involves listening to the other side's viewpoint, just to gain ways to then attack them verbally. One solution based approach is to collaborate which means to work together so both parties are happy. This is not the same as compromising. Reply
