Section 3: Essay View one of the following films (see list below). After you have completed viewing the film, explain how the film you chose utilizes narrative space, mise-en-scene, and one aspect of shot composition (framing, depth of field, movement, or color) to tell the story. I recommend that you focus on two scenes in the film, with a brief explanation of the film's plot and themes to explain how the scenes you select are representative of the plot, major themes, and motifs of the film. Your response should be around 300 words. You do not need to cite sources. Be sure your response contains a clear thesis and concrete examples to support it. Be sure to place film titles in italics and reference the director and the year the film was released (for example, Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino, 1994). Be sure to refer to characters by their name and not by actor (for example, say you choose to write about Moonrise Kingdom. You would refer to the character Mrs. Bishop and not the actor Frances McDormand.) To best complete the essay, I recommend that you watch the film and take detailed notes. You may find it useful to view the film twice. Once you are satisfied with your notes, you are ready to write your essay. The films you may select from are: Moonrise Kingdom (Wes Anderson, 2012) The Whale (Darren Aronofsky, 2022) Barbarian (Zach Cregger, 2022) Smile (Parker Finn, 2022)
