See the general instructions for the assignments in the course outline. In the video clip below, there is a scene from Sunset Boulevard (Billy Wilder, 1950), which you are to analyze

in your essay. In your analysis of the scene, identify the general narrative tradition in which the film can be placed. Explain how this scene relates to the overall narrative in the film. Carefully describe the techniques used in this scene, explaining how they are functioning to create specific narrative effects associated with that tradition. You may refer to any or all of the techniques that we have considered so far in the course -- mise- en-scène, cinematography, editing, and film sound -- in your formal analysis. Use the specific critical terms from the textbook (and from no other source), providing relevant quotations, as you describe the narrative use of techniques on display in the scene. You will be graded on how well you can employ the relevant terms and concepts from the textbook in your analysis, and on how well the essay is written. Re-read and revise before you submit, to correct any grammatical errors or misspellings. Format the essay, with proper citations and a list of "Works Cited" (the textbook, noting which edition) according to the basic template provided in the "Sample Essay" on the Brightspace course page. Consult the textbook for examples of formal film analyses and advice on writing film essays. See the side- bar essays on specific films as examples in the chapter on narrative, and look especially at the section "Elements of the Analytical Film Essay," on pp. 413-14, in the chapter "Writing Film Eccou"
