Short debate paper #3: a debate between left-wing populism and right-wing populism Students must produce a short paper that frames a debate between different kinds of populism. The debate 'topic' is

about how different kinds of populists perceive the 'general will', who they perceive as being the 'real' (American) people, and who they perceive as being corrupt elites. Each student will research, analyze, and write a report which compares the ideas of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, using specific speeches provided in the Moodle. Watch Trump's 2017 inaugural speech and Sanders' speech at the 'We The People' rally in 2019 and take note of populist concepts. Students are strongly encouraged to consult (and cite from) the chapter in the textbook, on populism. Demonstrate understanding of right-wing and left-wing populism, by connecting specific values/concepts from variants of populism, to concrete ideas in the speeches by Trump and Sanders. Show proofs of ideological concept within their speech acts. Consider things like: • Why might these politicians both be considered populists? • How are they different? Which form of populism is each politician, and why? According to each politician, what kinds of Americans do they consider to be the 'real people, and which societal groups are 'corrupt elites'? According to each politician, what kind of politics and policies do 'real' Americans want? How does each speaker manifest 'anti-politics'? (For this, try to connect specific examples in the speeches to the different kinds of "anti-politics' concepts discussed in the PPT and textbook chapter). •/nSources Students are forbidden from using any sources to complete this assignment, except the following: King, Conrad (2023). "Populism: 'The Will of the People'?" in Political Ideologies and Worldviews: an Introduction, 2nd Edition. Chapter 9. Sanders, Bernie (2019, April 1). Bernie Sanders addresses 'We the People' rally [Video]. Global News and YouTube. Trump, Donald (2017, January 20). Trump's inaugural speech in full [Video]. The Guardian. Evidence of other sources consulted or (incorrectly) cited will result in grading penalties and possible allegations of plagiarism./nThe report should be approximately 2 pages long. In terms of structure, the report should contain the following: • A very brief introduction paragraph that summarizes what is in the report. • A very brief conclusion paragraph that summarizes what the report contained. • 'Body' paragraphs (for example, you could have a paragraph for each politician, or you could have a paragraph that compares how each speaker manifest 'anti-politics', and so on). • A 'Works Cited' section which shows your sources (only those sources you actually cited in the report). This should be in APA-style (or I will also accept APSA-style).
