TASK OVERVIEW:

Please watch the short documentary about living in the

Antelope Valley produced and narrated by Johnny

Sanphillippo.

As you watch, take note of the relationship between the

film's soundtrack (mostly the vocal track of Sanphillippo

talking about AV infrastructure) and the on-screen images.

This video, by no means spectacular in terms of production

values or special effects, still manages to achieve a

satisfying coherence in the matching of the voice over and

visuals.

Nor are the two media streams redundant: Observe how the

abstract language on the soundtrack is coupled with

concrete imagery on the screen. This is a kind of filmic

equivalent to how to compose a printed paragraph--the

broad claims you hear being supported by the images you

see.

Of course with films, these two forms occur

simultaneously, adding to their coherence in meaning.

Using these tools, the film also makes an interesting

point about living in the Antelope Valley, perhaps even a

point you could miss just because it's so close to home.
