Question
Term Project Statement
MECH 311, Spring 24
Here are the tasks:
You will consider three applications: Turbine and compressor. For each of these applications, you
will consider the followings:
1) For the turbine, the fluid is water vapor.
2) For the compressor, the fluid is refrigerant R-134a.
Choose reasonable inlet condition for each case and select reasonable pressure value at the exit.
For each of the above applications, select at least 4 values of the isentropic efficiency. Make sure to
select a good range of the efficiency values with a good interval between every two values.
VERY Important Point:
Come to discuss things with me if you need any help or to clarify things further!
Good luck
General requirements for the report:
The tasks:
Use a good cover page with all relevant details, including a good project title, etc.. Be creative in
coming up with a good and concise title for your project.
Teams are min 2 students and max 4 students.
Start by giving the statement of the problem and the tasks required to be done in this project.
Also, give an introduction section in which you give a max of one-page description about the
applications considered: the Turbine, and the compressor. Mention areas where they are used and
give examples. Support your arguments by good references.
At the end of the project, give concise conclusion about the work done and your major findings and
recommendations.
Give a list of references for the references you referred to in your work and be sure that you cite all
references in the main body of the report; not only to list them at the end of the report.
1 Also, make sure to number the references at the end based on the order of their first appearance
in the main body of the report.
Avoid using Al in your project. I want to see your ability to write the report.
You took EES in the previous thermodynamics course. So, refresh your memory and use EES in
solving the tasks of this project. I will not be teaching EES in this course, but you have to use it in
the project.
You have to submit your work in the last week of the semester.
Technical tasks:
You have to show a section for the mathematical formulation of the equations you used in your
work. Support each equation by a reference (e.g. your textbook could be one such reference). You
should not only list the used equations, one by one! But, you have to describe (briefly) the
equations. Give number to each of these equations.
For the compressor and the turbine:
Calculate the power for each of the isentropic efficiency values you selected.
Plot the power vs efficiency.
Calculate the rate of entropy generation in the compressor and the turbine.
Use exergy balance equation to calculate the rate of exergy destruction in the compressor and the
turbine.
Compare the result you get for the rate of exergy destruction based on the exergy balance
equation with the value you get from multiplication of To times the rate of entropy generation. And
give comments.
Calculate the second lay efficiency for both the turbine and the compressor.
Do the calculation both using EES software and manually and show that you can get similar
answers by both approaches.
You must give the EES code that you used in the report.
Do the calculation both using EES software and manually and show that you can get similar
answers by both approaches.
You must give the EES code that you used in the report.
Make any reasonable assumptions you find necessary and select your operating parameters
properly and state everything very clearly and professionally.
2 The number of pages in the report is not the important thing, but the quality of your report is the
one thing I will consider. Make sure you depend only on yourself while doing the project. I do not
value a report with very high level of writing if it was not yours!
