The Brief Design background and design requirements A coastal city is planning to have new building development at the waterfront and wind farm in shallow water areas. Therefore, for the new building, a continuous vertical wall (see Fig.1) is required to retain an earth bank. The offshore wind turbine will also need to be designed (see, Fig2). The earth bank is [3.5 + XY/100] meters above the water table level, see Fig. 1, where XY is 33. . On the earth bank, a property with a requirement for a square pad footing will need to be designed to support a total load of 750 kN (including self-weight of foundation concrete), of which 500 kN is permanent and 250 kN is variable. The foundation depth will be 2.5m. (3.5 + XY/100)m Figure 1. The regaining structure 19'000kN m 5 2800KN 10m V 20m 1.5kN/m L? Figure 2. Monopile design diagram 4 | Page The earth bank soil properties are: Ydry;k = 16 KN/m3; Ysaturated;k = 22 KN/m3; Ywater = 10 KN/m3; c'k = 0; ¢'k = 34°; Cu = 48kPa, 8k = 0°; U.D.L. = [12 + XY/100 ] kPa on the active side of the wall only, where XY is 33. The soil in the water is medium dense well-graded quartz sand with Ysat = 19 kN/m3 and obtained from the laboratory test result is 20 degrees, and the water depth is 20 meters. The nacelle load will be 2400 KN, the rotor will be 1100 KN and the tower will be 3500 kN. See Fig. 2 for the horizontal load and the moment. The plugged pile will be chosen for the design with an outer diameter of 5 m, the steel will be 100 mm thick with a weight density of 78 kN/m3 and Young's modulus of 200,000 MPa This will involve considering the design of the shallow foundation, retaining wall and a pile foundation. The tasks below are 2. The retaining structure design will be based on the concept of Eurocode 7 and meet the ULS to Eurocode 7 for both Design Approach 1 - Combination 1 and Design Approach 1 - Combination 2. Compare the results of the outputs for these design cases. 3. determine the size of the pad foundation (only Design Approach 1 - Combination 1 is required). Please advise on the essential checking criteria for designing a shallow foundation. 5 | Page
