You will analyze your own cultural competence and gender awareness, identify areas for growth, choose one or the other for the focus of your assignment, and propose strategies for fostering a more inclusive and culturally competent environment. First, you will simply be reflecting. Review the course materials listed under content, particularly the written lectures on Culture and Communication and Gender and Communication. Review the two following topic options for the focus of your assignment: Topic option 1: Cultural Competence Self-Assessment Conduct a self-assessment of your own cultural competence. Reflect on your understanding of different cultures, beliefs, and values. Consider your experiences with people from diverse backgrounds, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, and socioeconomic status. Identify specific instances where you have demonstrated cultural competence or encountered challenges related to cultural differences. Describe these situations and your reactions. Discuss your strengths and weaknesses in terms of cultural competence. What cultural biases or assumptions have you identified within yourself? Propose two strategies you can implement to promote cultural competence in your personal and academic life. Explain how you plan to implement these strategies and measure your progress. Conclude by summarizing the key takeaways from your self-assessment and reflection. Highlight the importance of cultural competence in promoting a diverse and inclusive society. Topic option 2: Gender Inclusivity Awareness Reflect on your awareness of gender inclusivity. Consider how you perceive and interact with individuals of different gender identities, including cisgender, transgender, and non-binary individuals. Describe any experiences or encounters where you have demonstrated gender inclusivity or where you have observed gender-related challenges or bias. Discuss your understanding of gender stereotypes and their impact on communication and relationships. Propose two strategies you can implement to promote gender inclusivity in your personal and academic life. Explain how you plan to implement these strategies and measure your progress. Conclude by summarizing the key takeaways from your self-assessment and reflection. Highlight the importance of gender inclusivity in promoting a diverse and inclusive society. Regardless of which topic option you choose, you will also have three format options for submitting the assignment: Option 1: Paper of approximately 800 words Option 2: PowerPoint of approximately 6-8 slides + Speaker notes (APA) Option 3: Video of approximately 3-5 minutes Choose one format for submission and answer the questions related to your chosen topic on either cultural competence or gender inclusivity awareness. Formatting Guidelines: Use APA formatting for citations and references on written work or PowerPoint. Orally cite sources if submitted in video format. Include at least two scholarly sources to support your reflection and strategies regardless of format submission.
