Without their use, civilised society today would have still been using candles and lamps to see at nights. Noteworthy is the fact that even Nuclear Power Plants which produce 'green' energy, rely on steam turbines as the device that produces Work, W, when water-steam is used as the working fluid in a Rankine (Steam) Thermodynamic Cycle. To demonstrate your technical understanding of the thermodynamics that governs the operation of Steam Turbines: (a) Sketch a Process Flow Diagram for a Rankine (Steam) Cycle which incorporates a Steam Turbine driven by saturated water vapour produced in a boiler, indicating the main conditions on a Phose diagram of choice. [6 marks] (b) Using an appropriate Phose Diagram, as well as, any relevant equations that define thermodynamic state and properties, explain whether or not, and why, elevating the temperature of the steam produced in the boiler, beyond its saturated vapour pressure, might be of any benefit in improving the overall thermal efficiency of the cycle. [8 marks] (c) Explain, using Phose and/or Process Flow Diagrams, if necessary, what other strategies can be implemented to improve the thermal efficiency of the above thermodynamic cycle. [6 marks]
