Page 2/5 TASK DESCRIPTION Prepare a case study, by researching and analysing a significant Engineering Failure which happened recently or in history. A few popular engineering failures are listed below, yet you can select any engineering failure of your choice for this task. The collapse of the Quebec Bridge The disaster of The Space Shuttle Challenger The Nuclear Plant Explosion in Chernobyl The Collapse of the Tacoma Bridge Any other engineering failure of your choice The suggested approach to organising your report is as follows: 1. Briefly describe the Case study you have chosen and discuss its (real or potential) significance for the community, economy, or engineering advancement. 2. Briefly describe the engineering failure - what happened? Explain why it failed. What were the reasons for the failure as being identified in the literature considering socio-cultural, safety, ethical and sustainable aspects related to engineering design? Try to identify 'who is responsible' for the failure and 'what could have been done differently' to avoid the failure. 3. Discuss any breach of Engineering Ethics in the selected Engineering failure with reference to 'Engineering ethics' course content as well as the Engineers Australia Code of Ethics. Clearly identify which elements of the EA Code of Ethics-Ethical Conduct elements have been breached. Also, discuss ethical theories that are applicable to this case study. Questions to ponder. Are there relevant ethical issues in the selected engineering failure and what are they?' (If you do not see any ethical issues applicable, choose a different case study which you can use to analyse engineering ethics) ● When did which ethical issue come into play? Which elements of the EA Code of Ethics have been breached? Which ethical theories are applicable to the issues discussed? Your report should contain the following sections: Abstract: Provide a brief overview of the full case study analysis here. Write this section once you have completed the rest of the report. Introduction: In the introduction you need to introduce the topic to your reader. Introductions move from general to more specific information to introduce your topic. Provide a general background to successful and failed engineering projects, significant engineering failures in the history, common causes for these failures and importance of engineering ethics and ethical conduct of engineering professionals for project success. Page 3/5 ● ● FURTHER ADVICE AND RESOURCES ● Body: Use headings and sub-headings appropriately in the body of the report. In this section you are to discuss the case study you have chosen using the suggested approach outlined in the previous section of this document. Read, analyse and examine the case study thoroughly. This case study assignment requires you to identify the problems and issues in the selected scenarios and to demonstrate your developing knowledge of theories and professional policies and provide your suggestions on how this kind of failures could be avoided. Before you begin your assessment, you should be familiar with the course materials on 'Engineering ethics'. Some of the key concepts that are relevant to this assessment include ethics, ethical conduct, and prescriptive ethics for an engineering practitioner. ● Conclusion: Provide a brief conclusion. Your conclusion needs to draw together all the main points you have discussed in the body section without adding any new ideas that has not been discussed prior. Useful Resources: Reference list: Use at least 5 scholarly articles for the review. List the sources you have used here using the APA 7 Referencing Style and each reference list entry needs to have a corresponding in-text reference APA 7 style. ● ● Bazerman, M. H., & Tenbrunsel, A. Keep paragraphs simple - one concept per paragraph. Refer to the guidance on writing reports provided by Student Support and available at this link:https://lo.unisa.edu.au/mod/book/view.php?id=1670006&chapterid=267489 ● ● REFERENCING USING THE APA 7 STYLE ● ● A scholarly source, or academic source, is written by a qualified author who is an expert in their field. Theyare usually published in books or journals, rather than on websites. A scholarly source will likely have a reference list or bibliography at the end of it. https://www.library.unisa.edu.au/siteassēts/files/scholarlysources.pdf ● ● Use the APA 7 referencing style. The guide is available at the following link: https://www.unisa.edu.au/Referencing ● MS Word Add-on Endnote is available at the UniSA library for managing citations. There is a Referencing Forum where assistance is available to students who have specific referencing queries: https://lo.unisa.edu.au/mod/forum/view.php?id=289100 If finding information in the course resources, then the course resources are to be referenced both in-text and the reference list. Every different part of the course website will need its own reference and as per the APA 7 Referencing style: How do I reference multiple sources by the same author published in the same year? If an author has published more than one item in the same year, place a lower case letter of the alphabet next to the dates in your in-text referencing to distinguish between these separate publications. E.g. Stam argues this point eloquently (2005a) and reiterates it elsewhere. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY ● The UniSA Online Academic Literacy Modules are designed to help you acquire and practice the academic skills to help you improve your assessment tasks and succeed in your degree. When using another person's ideas or work, you must acknowledge the source through applying the correct referencing techniques.
