Question

Water at 80°F is pumped from the well with discharge 0.5ft³/s (224 gpm). The pipe used has 2-in.-diameter pipe and 14 ft length with friction factor f = 0.0275. There is also one elbow in the path with a loss coefficient of 0.9. For water at 80°F use vapor pressure = 0.5 psi and specific weight = 62.4lb/ft³. Use absolute atmospheric pressure of 14.7 psi. (1 psi =144 psf)

a. What is head loss in this system? b. Will cavitation occur in the pump? The pump curves are provided on page 7.characteristic c. Why do we need to prevent cavitation in the design and what are the effects of cavitation on performance and life of a system.
