Writing an Effective Director's Paper An effective paper will include an introduction that identifies the scene you have selected and the overall vision that you have for your direction of that scene. When addressing any of the prompts above, keep in mind that you need to offer not only an explanation of what choices you would make, but also an explanation of why you would make each of these choices. In other words, you need to support your artistic vision with evidence from the text (quotes and direct references) that supports your interpretation of the scene and your argument for why this would be an appropriate and/or intriguing artistic choice. There are a million possibilities, but you'll want to make sure you're able to keep your paper focused on a particular aspect, theme, idea, or relationship from this scene that you wish to emphasize through your artistic choices. Once you've established a focus, you'll be ready to craft a thesis statement that articulates the overall vision that connects the choices you will discuss in the paper. So, for example, a thesis for this paper might follow this format: "When directing Act _ Scene _ from _, I would do _ in order to emphasize _." (You are welcome to use a two-sentence thesis if that helps prevent a clunky sentence.) Please underline your thesis so I can know what you consider the thesis. You should not use secondary sources for this assignment. Getting Started 1. Select the scene you wish to analyze. 2. Reread the scene in its entirety a few times, and consider the prompts provided in the overview above. 3. Write a director's paper that explains your artistic vision for the scene. The entire essay should support this vision. Make sure to include specific quotes from the scene that help illustrate why your artistic choices would be thematically relevant, provocative, etc.. Submit your paper by the end of this week's Module. Formatting and Other Expectations The paper must be 1,000-1,500 words, double-spaced. • Use standard one-inch margins and include page numbers. • Use Times New Roman, 12-point font.
