WST 103: An Introduction to Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies This semester, you will write two reflections: the first in Week 3 and the second in Week 11. Each reflection should be at least 500 words, should demonstrate a thoughtful engagement with the course material, and should include direct references to at least two assigned texts (readings, films, or podcasts). This assignment provides you with the opportunity to 1) demonstrate your understanding of key concepts and 2) draw connections between those concepts and the world beyond this class. For Reflection #1, you will write about the sex/gender/sexuality system and about examples where you have seen this system impacting your life or other people's lives. Here are a few prompt questions to spark your thinking. Note: We don't expect you to answer all of these questions; just focus on the one/s that you find most relevant or interesting. ● Reflection #1: The Sex/Gender/Sexuality System ● ● Can you think of times where you've seen people being forced to conform to dominant gender or sexual norms? Have you ever observed people being punished or harassed for doing gender "incorrectly" or desiring the "wrong" romantic partner? Have you ever felt trapped in or limited by the sex/gender/sexuality system? Can you think of moments the “rules” of sex, gender, and sexuality are not being said aloud but are definitely present? Have you ever seen someone subtly alter their own behavior to conform to gender or sexual norms? In what ways has the sex/gender/ sexuality system affected your life? At the time, did you notice what was happening? Can you think of instances where people really enjoying expressing their gender or sexual identities? In those moments, does their pleasure come from embracing dominant gender or sexual norms? or from resisting them? Have you ever really enjoyed expressing your own gender or sexual identities? What Should I Write About? Well, it's really up to you! Just keep in mind the purpose of this assignment. Your goal is to demonstrate your understanding of the sex/gender/sexuality system by drawing connections between this concept and the world beyond this class. (The professor did this during Week 1's Mini Lecture when she talked about her godson's infant-sized “Ladies Man" shirt.) Some students will feel comfortable and excited to write about their personal or professional experiences. If you fall in that category, then your reflection can be about how gender and sexual norms have impacted your life. Other students will prefer to discuss the sex/gender/sexuality system in relation to cultural objects they've encountered, like art, film, music, television, literature, news media, video games, social media, activist projects, law and policy, science and medicine, or something else entirely! If that's you, then your reflection can be about the links between the object/s you've chosen and gender and sexual norms. What Should My Reflections Look Like? Your reflections should be at least 500 words (but not longer than 750) and saved as an MS Word (or equivalent) file. ● ● Your reflection can strike a more casual tone than a formal essay, but it should still contain full sentences, be organized into paragraphs, include an introduction and a conclusion, and be proofread. Your introduction should introduce us to your reflection: what will we find in the following paragraphs. It does not need to include a proper thesis statement; you are not required to develop an overarching argument in your reflection. The body of your reflection should include: O one or more specific examples of the sex/gender/sexuality system at work in the world (in your own life and/or through a cultural object) your reflections on the connections between your examples and gender/sexual norms; explain why you chose each example and how it links to the course material O O references to at least two texts (readings or film) from Weeks 1, 2, or 3. You can either mention specific authors in the body, or you can include direct quotes with in-text citations. Your conclusion should wrap up your reflection. Rather than abruptly ending your paper, include a sentence or two that sums up the most significant parts of your reflection. Your works cited page should include bibliographic information in MLA style for each text you reference. You can find citations for all the assigned texts in the "Content" section of Brightspace under the heading "Syllabus and Course Information." HOW DO I TURN IN REFLECTION #1? Once you're done with your reflection, please submit the assignment via Brightspace as a single file. (Click on "Assignments” in the Navbar, and then choose "Reflection #1.") You can, of course, upload your reflection an MS Word document, but Brightspace will also accept PDF, GIF, JPG, PNG, PPT, and TIF files. HOW WILL MY REFLECTION BE GRADED? For this assignment, you will be assessed on a scale of Strong, Satisfactory, Getting There, and Falling Short. You can earn up to 10 points on this assignment.
