American Sign Language You will choose a film (movies or videos) that represents the Deaf community. They can be either entertainment (movies) or documentary (videos). After you watch them, answer questions to your best knowledge. Don't worry, I do not expect you to be an expert in our community, but I want you to provide your thoughts to your best capability as this is a reflective assignment. For a great starter with a list of videos, you may register in DCMP.org and explore videos there. It appears to be easy to register and it is free. You can also choose a film from Netflix. They will be a great tool for those of you whom want to advance careers in the Deaf community. Otherwise, ask me for permission first. Be sure to answer all of these questions (below) in your report: What is the name of the movie? Why did you pick this movie? Explain if you like it or why not. What's the Deaf person/s name? (research and find the actor/actress names) You will be amazed if its original Deaf or Hearing signer. What are some things that you noticed in the movie that you wouldn't normally find in hearing culture? Explain in detail what in the movie was about and/or what the purpose of the movie was? (i.e.- church service, fundraiser, social, etc.) Would you watch the movie again? Would you recommend it to another ASL student? What did you learn from this movie? What will you remember about this movie? Knowing what you know now after watching the movie, what do you wish you had known more about PRIOR to watch this movie? Specific vocabulary or phrases? Cultural information? Elaborate. Who did you watch the movie with? Another classmate? Friend? Significant other? How did their presence impact your ability to interact with others when watching the movie. If you watch the movie alone, was there a reason why you chose to attend alone? Do you feel that attending an ASL event/ watching movie should be a necessary component of ASL classes, now that you have ASL event/ or watch a movie? Please read the article below.
