Question

You will choose a social dance experience of your choice. This can be a club, a family party, a street festival, or other events that fit within the basic definition of a "social dance experience" discussed in class. Based on what we have discussed in class, be sure you go through the three steps: 1. Observe the event in detail. 2. Describe the event in detail. 3. Analyze your participation and that of the other people in attendance according to some of the basic social dance elements and how these apply to this particular situation. Some questions you might consider: Where is the event taking place? What has brought these people together? What kind of music is being played? How are people dressed? What is the quality of their interaction if there is more than one cultural group or community represented? How is viewing and/or participating in this event now that you know what you know different from past experiences? What do you notice about the social norms and behaviors in effect that you had not noticed before. Though these are NOT ALL the questions you can be asking, they are some of the central ones. Please take your discussion in the direction that makes the most sense given your event. Remember to use the "Reflective Writing Guidelines" available under the Course Content section for assistance as you write. The paper must be a minimum of 2 pages, double-spaced, in no larger than 12 point font size. Remember this is a minimum and, as such, your paper will be as long as it needs to be the address the questions at hand. Most importantly, HAVE FUN and see what this opportunity gives you in terms of following your curiosity and capacity for observation. This assignment meets the requirement of examining, experiencing, and describing social dance's role present in one's own life under the specific learning outcomes for Unit 3. *An online pre-recorded event can count as an option for writing your paper as well.
