Question

1) [20 pts] A test setup was developed to collect data on the impact resistance and energy absorption properties of plastic materials. A plastic test plate composes one side of

the box filled with sand. The cone impact or is released from an elevated position defined by 0, swings about the fixed point A, and impacts/penetrates the plastic plate. The box is initially at rest. At the instant of impact, the massless rod of length L releases the impactor and has no influence on the dynamics of the problem. For the test shown, the cone impactor passes through the plastic plate and embeds into the box of sand. The box with the impactor slides along the flat horizontal surface as shown by the arrow. Mass of box of sand M = 20 kg Mass of cone impactor m = 10 kg Length of pivot rod L = 3 m Release angle theta = 70°Friction coefficient u = 0.25 Determine the following: 1) the velocity of the box with the embedded impactor immediately after the impact. 2) the distance the box slides before stopping 3) the elapsed time from impact until the box stops 4) If the impact event takes 0.01 seconds, determine the average force of impact from the impactor striking the plastic plate.
