1. Citizenship in the polis was centered on how people resided in the modest, spontaneous communities of the polis during the period of the ancient Greeks. To put it another way, responsibilities of citizens to the community, not liberties granted to individuals Therefore, it's indeed appropriate to refer to the polis as the community of citizens. The people of the ancient Greeks did not recognize themselves as distinct, homogenized entities. They declared themselves to be kin, community, or indigenous tribes. In addition, regardless how far away, they known as representatives of ever-expanding collections of individuals with close familial connections. Citizenship was denied to anyone born outside the polis, and they were unable to cast ballots in any polis other than the one in which they were born. Citizens with extensive political and judicial rights are independent men of legal age who have been legally born to citizens. They were obligated to participate in moments of war in addition to being entitled to vote, hold public office, and possess armaments. Metics weren't allowed to cast ballots or run for office. If a freed slave choose to stay in the polis, he was also awarded the dignity of a metic. Due to their lack of citizenship, women were unable to participate in politics or cast ballots. Even inside their own homes, women were limited in where they could go and were hardly ever allowed to appear in public. Citizens of a polis have a duty to support its government, religious organizations, military, and economic well-being while abiding by its sacred and normative regulations.
