Question

1) Write and solve the underlying governing differential equations assuming all cars start at the

same location and are initially at rest. Which of the vehicles provides the best ride under the road

conditions? (you can use any method of solution).

2) Plot the vertical displacement experienced by each vehicle over time./n1. You will work on this project with your assigned (selected) team-mate

2. You can discuss with your team-mate but not with other classmates

3. You have 3 lifelines to use with your instructor

4. You must submit a work distribution sheet as part of your submission. Clearly state who did

what. Please avoid saying both worked equally. That does not happen (usually that means one

person worked and other was present there).

5. Good Luck

The spring constants and dampening coefficients of 3 vehicles are given in the Table below. All 3

vehicles are used to travel on a county road which has a sinusoidal surface with an amplitude of

1.25 ft and a wavelength of 25 ft (see Figure below). The posted speed limit on the road is 50 mph

(v). Based on these conditions the external forcing exerted by the road can be written as:

f(t) = A,cos

2π * v*t

L

u

(m,k,d)

25 ft

► f(t)

(1)

Where, A. is the amplitude in ft, L is the wavelength; v is the velocity of the car and t is the time.

The units must be consistent.
