Bondanella & Pacchioni (2017, p. 185-186) have described Mario Monicelli’s films from the late 50s-early 60s as a classic example of commedia all’ italiana because according to them these films showed not a rosy picture like seen in the neorealist period rather they depicted an undercurrent of social malice. Thus, according to me, it is a fair assessment that Monicelli’s work display a more logical progression or response to the crisis of neorealism than other genres previously discussed because his films displayed the real political, economic, and social problems of Italy by portraying dysfunctional social institutions (Bondanella & Pacchioni, 2017, p. 186); (Criterion Creeps, 2018).
