Question

4 At a concert the musicians have set up: A vertical 1.2m long tube that is open at the top end closed at the bottom (such as an organ pipe

or a boom-whacker). A bit above the open end of the tube, is a wire that is fixed at both ends and vibrates at its fundamental resonance frequency (such as a guitar string). The wire has a length 0.33m and mass 9.6g. During a piece, the vibrating guitar string sets the air column in the tube oscillating at its fundamental resonance frequency and thus the organ pipe sings! Find the fundamental frequency of the wire. Find the tension in the wire. Be sure to draw a clear picture of the setup - draw the wire and the standing wave on it so that its oscillations would generate a sound wave that enters the tube. Ans. 71.5 1/s, 64.7N
