Question

4. Consider a three-slab geometry of three identical slabs of equal widths W = 1 m in x-direction, and

infinite extent in y and z directions. In slab 1 extending over -2W <<-W, charge density p is

Po, where po = 2 C/m³. In slab 2 extending over -W

slab 3 extending over 0 < x < W the charge density is -3po. Charge density p is zero everywhere

else. Determine and sketch E₂ (2) over the region -3W < x < 3W. Label both axes of your plot

carefully, marking the field value at each break point.

Hint: use superposition of shifted and scaled versions of the static field configuration of a single

charged slab. Alternatively determine Ex(x) for x » W and x < -W first, and then construct the

Ex(x) plot with linear rises and drops across the slabs and verify that the plot has the correct slopes.
