Question

4. The container below is not at equilibrium. The left side contains solid and liquid ethanol;

the right side contains solid and liquid water. An insulated divider separates the liquids

on the left and right sides, but the vapor phases can mix. Explain what happens (i.e.,

phase changes, temperature changes, and the movement of ethanol and/or water) as

the system approaches equilibrium. Hint: Assume no energy transfer between the two

sides. After the system equilibrates, we add salt to the right side. Explain what happens

as the system re-equilibrates.
