An unwanted situation in DBMS where 2 or more transactions get stuck in an infinite loop, where each transaction waits for one other to get terminated. Deadlock brings the whole system to a halt as no task ever gets finished and is in a waiting state forever.

Deadlocks can be avoided by:

In case of smaller databases we can use wait for graph for detecting deadlocks but for large databases we need to switch to prevention methods.

If the database gets stuck in a deadlock it is advisable to switch to another database rather than try to abort, it will only be a waste of resources.

Following are the ways we can resolve deadlock:

Ostrich Approach: By using the ostrich algorithm, the impasse is merely disregarded and it is presumed that it will never happen. This is done because handling deadlocks in some systems is more expensive than ignoring them because they don't happen very often.

Process termination and resources deallocation. When a deadlock occurs, the normal solution is to rollback one of the transactions to remove its changes from the database.
