Question

A hot-mix asphalt recycling project is to have between 20%-40% RAP aggregates in the asphalt concrete. Virgin aggregates will come from two sources; A and B, and are to be

blended in the proportion of 70%A and 30%B. Solvent extraction test on the RAP material gave an asphalt content of 5.1%. The absolute viscosity of the reclaimed asphalt binder was 90,000poise. The new asphalt selected for the project is a blend of AC-10 and a recycling agent (rejuvenator) whose viscosity is10poise. The gradation of the aggregates involved in the project is as detailed below. As the engineer responsible for the design of the recycling project, and based on yourrecommendation of the % of RAP aggregates to be used, determine the following; the gradation of the recycled mix; the approximate asphalt demand of the mix; the range of asphalt contents to be used for the trial mix design in the lab; the percent new asphalt required; the proportions in which the AC-10 and recycling agent are to be combined for the newasphalt.
