Question

A mixture stream containing 50 kmol of sorbitol, 750 kmol of water and 6000 kmol of hydrogen leaves

a reactor at 145 °C and 70 barg. It is then cooled and sent to a flash to be separated into a gas stream

of hydrogen for recycle back to the reactor and an aqueous sorbitol solution stream. The flask is to be

operated at a temperature in the range of 50-100 °C and the pressure of 50 barg. You are asked to

1. calculate the composition of the gas and aqueous sorbitol streams in the temperature range

interested by

(a)

taking the system as an ideal system

(b) taking the system as a real system

2. draw a diagram to show the molar faction of hydrogen and sorbitol varying with

temperature.
