Question

(a) What are the different types of casting processes? Briefly describe them. (b) A cylindrical casting is 0.1 m in diameter and 0.5 m in length. Another casting of the

same metal is elliptical in cross-section, with a major axis to minor axis ratio of 2 and has the same length as that of the round casting. If the area of cross-section of the elliptical casting is twice that of the round casting, what is the difference in the solidification times of the two castings? Assume both pieces are cast under the same conditions. (c) What are the critical advantages of centrifugal casting which makes it ideal for certain applications?
