Question

An experiment has been conducted to look at the effects of L-carnitine and cinnamon extract treatment on lens crystallins of rats fed on a high fructose diet. Male Wister rats

of body weight 120-160 g were divided into two groups of 15 rats each. Group 1 animals received the fructose enriched diet. Group 2 animals received the fructose diet and after 2weeks L-carnitine (300 mg/kg/day) was administrated. At the end of the experimental period (30 days), a number of measurements were made. Specifically, the lenses of each animal were dissected, a lens homogenate was prepared from both lenses of each animal and the level of malondialdehyde, MDA, (nmol/g lens) was determined. (a) Plot the boxplot for both groups in one window. (b) Comment on the shape of their distributions (symmetric or skewed) (c) Depending on the shape of distributions, provide statistics that best describe and represent the data. (d) Comment how many, if there is any, high or low outliers in the measurements. (e) Carry out an appropriate test analysis to determine if the mean MDA levels differ significantly between Group 1 and Group 2. (Work at the 0.05 level of significance.) Interpret and justify yourtest result.(3) A third group of rats had been used in the experiment. Group 3 animals received the fructose diet and after 2 weeks animals were treated orally with cinnamon extract (0.5 mL/rat/day). Data has just arrived for this group and is given below. (f) Carry out an appropriate descriptive analysis for MDA group 3. (g) Carry out an appropriate analysis to investigate if the mean MDA levels differ amongst the three groups (Work at the 0.05 level of significance). Write a full report on your findings.(4)
