Understanding the Global Supply Chains through real-time Supply Chain Mapping
Despite many supply-chain disruptions caused by disasters in the last decade most businesses still found
themselves unprepared for the Covid-19 pandemic. Seventy percent of 300 respondents to a survey
conducted by Resilinc right after the pandemic outbreak said they were still in data collection and
assessment mode and trying to figure out which of their suppliers had a site in the specific locked-down
regions of China.
Only those companies that invested in mapping their supply networks before the pandemic emerged better
prepared. They had more visibility into the structure of their supply chains. Instead of struggling at the
last minute, they had information available within instants of a disruption. They knew exactly which
suppliers were are at risk, allowing them to put themselves first in line to secure constrained inventory
and capacity at alternate sites.
Activity
You have recently been appointed as the Global Supply Chain Manager for one of the most important
apparel companies, Patagonia. Patagonia is known in the textile world as a Sustainable Player. The
mission statement of Patagonia is "We aim to use the resources we have―our voice, our business and
our community to do something about our climate crisis". The company takes pride in sustainable
sourcing and makes no compromises on it. See company website for more information on this
(https://www.patagonia.com)
Very recently one of your major suppliers of Cotton T-shirt based in one of the countries in Asia has been
blacklisted due to their unsustainable labor practices. Patagonia has given you the responsibility to find a
new supplier for the T-shirt. You are also expected to make sure that the supplier follows sustainable
practices. Moreover, you also have to be aware of the 2nd and 3rd tier suppliers of the shortlisted supplier
in order to account for any future supply disruption. Therefore, it is extremely important that you map
Supply Chain for this product up until third tier.
Designing Supply Chain Maps is tedious but has lots of benefits for the firm in long run, especially in
case of sudden disruptions, just like what happened during Covid-19.

Your task is to prepare a report within a week and present it to the board of directors. In doing so please
cover the following points in your report:
•
Three-tier supply chain map for the shirt with detailed explanation on why you choose to go with
the short-listed supplier. Does the supplier (and its 2nd and 3rd tier suppliers) qualify as
sustainable?
What other information can you present regarding the suppliers? What are your data sources?
Visuals of Supply Chain Maps
Describe the best possible procedure of getting the product to the United States, covering
INCOTERMS, Payment Terms, Local Culture, Mode of Transportation, Lead Times, Costs
Possible Risks etc.
Please make sure the report is no longer than 4 pages and is written in Times New Roman 12-point font
with 1.5 spacing. The board will appreciate if you include mapping visuals in your report. All the
information needs to be well cited towards the end of the report.
Do your best and put in good amount of rigor while making the report. Supply Chain Mapping after all is
a rigorous but extremely relevant and much needed task within Global Supply Chains. It would prepare
you to become a highly effective Global Supply Chain Manager in your company.
Good Luck!/n Read the Patagonia case. You have to find a new tier 1 supplier for:
https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-capilene-cool-merino-graphic-shirt/44590.html?
dwvar 44590 color=HEBK&cgid=mens-new-styles B
Additionally, you also have to find the Tier 2 and Teir 3. Answer these questions:
1. Three-tier supply chain map for the shirt with detailed explanation on why you choose to go with the short-
listed supplier. Does the supplier (and its 2nd and 3rd tier suppliers) qualify as sustainable?
2. What other information can you present regarding the suppliers? What are your data sources?
3. Visuals of Supply Chain Maps. Use Starboard to create the map. You can use the description from here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yPfQu_r05E
4. Describe the best possible procedure of getting the product to the United States, covering INCOTERMS,
Payment Terms, Local Culture, Mode of Transportation, Lead Times, Costs Possible Risks etc.
To get sea route shipping on Starboard, you need to ensure that the origin and the destination are on the shore,
and ideally they should be existing ports. In case you still find this to be problematic, you can select any mode
that is available. Patagonia
