Discussion Prompt: Is it possible to portray people in poverty without humiliating or glamorizing, or otherwise

disempowering or exploiting?

Locate, share, and critically evaluate a donation drive, health effort, or newspaper article that seems to either meet or

fail to meet the ethical standards you would set for non-stigmatizing images of people living with poverty. Consider:

Why did you think this image you have shared might meet the standard of "poverty porn"?

What do you think the piece trying to convey or do? For example, what emotions is it trying to evoke?

How does this image potentially harm and humiliate or denigrate?

Can you locate a different image that could be better used instead?

Be sure to attach your image to your initial post, and also make sure you provide the source. [If you are having technical

difficulties with uploading the image, you can also put it in a google doc and provide the link.]

In responding to others' posts: Do you agree the picture is exploitative and harmful? Or, as the case may be, do you

agree that it is ethical? Why or why not? It's ok to kindly and politely disagree, providing a clear explanation and

rationale. How could the image be adjusted to ethically convey its "helpful" intent? Many relevant images can be

variously interpreted both as harmful and helpful.
