THE ASSIGNMENT
→ Write a paper that analyzes a sequence (a scene or connected series of related scenes that
are edited together and comprise a single, unified event, setting, or story within a film's
narrative) or two related sequences from the movie Freedom Writers. You will need to
identify the rhetorical purpose of the sequence(s), examine the rhetorical elements
employed (mise-en-scène, cinematography, acting, editing, sound) and explain how these
elements work together to achieve the rhetorical goal-successfully or unsuccessfully.
* Your audience is your instructor, classmates and general college level readers.
* Your purpose is to explain clearly and convincingly how the movie sequence uses
rhetorical elements to convey its message (theme, mood, characterization, etc.) to the
audience.
Introduce the movie by briefly explaining its rhetorical situation (creator, full title, time
and place of production, target audience, genre, etc.); and summarize the movie briefly
(4-5 sentences).
Introduce the sequence you want to analyze with a brief visual description; and discuss
what the sequence does in the context of the entire movie and why it is significant to
