Use headings to help the reader navigate your memo and slides Canvas submission: . doc or .docx format Grade: 50 points or 5% of the course grade OVERVIEW Write a memo on the importance of constructing a good argument and using sound rhetoric in technical communications. (Refer to the lecture PDFs for information on the Toulmin model or argument and the rhetorical triangle for more on these ideas.) STEPS TO COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT Begin the memo by including four separate lines, as below: To: [me] From: [you] Subject: [Reflective memo] Date: [The date on which you are submitting] Then include the following subheadings: A statement of purpose - a brief (1-2 sentences) statement about what the memo is intended to accomplish. A summary - a paragraph detailing the memo's contents, and concluding with a one- sentence distillation of the conclusion. Discussion - discuss the various ways in which good arguments and sound rhetoric improve technical writing. You may use theoretical examples to support your ideas. Conclusion - give your opinion as to which is more important - good arguments, or sound rhetoric? Grading rubric Memos receiving an A grade will be fluently and cogently expressed. The elements stipulated above will all be present, the memo will exhibit correct grammar, and there will be no, or very few, mechanical errors such as spelling mistakes, incorrect punctuation, and incorrect capitalization. Memos receiving a B grade will be fluently and cogently expressed for the most part, but may exhibit grammatical errors or awkward/unwieldy passages here and there. The elements stipulated above will all be present, though some may be treated more cursorily. There may be a few mechanical errors, including (but not limited to) spelling mistakes, incorrect punctuation, and incorrect capitalization. Formatting (spacing, font usage/size, margins etc.) may deviate in some ways from the assignment's requirements. Memos receiving a C grade will contain some readable passages, but may be lacking in fluency, or may adopt an inappropriate written register at times. Some elements stipulated above may be present, but there may be important omissions. The memo may exhibit a general lack of focus. Grammatical and mechanical errors may be somewhat frequent. Formatting (spacing, font usage/size, margins etc.) may deviate in some ways from the assignment's requirements. Memos receiving a D grade or below will exhibit weak expression, which may be characterized by poor grammar, a general lack of fluency, inappropriate tone, and so on. Some of the elements stipulated above may be absent or confusingly represented, and the memo may be unfocused or incoherent. There will be many mechanical and/or grammatical errors. The memo may be severely under length (or severely over length). Formatting requirements may be ignored or inadequately addressed.
