Fatty acid synthesis and beta-oxidation are similar in that: Both involve NADP+/NADPH. The reactions for synthesis are the exact reverse of the reactions involved in beta-oxidation. Both involve changing the length of the fatty acid chain by 2 carbons at a time. Both occur in the mitochondrial matrix.
