Final Research Project & Write-Up
The Final Research Project is a 3 week course of intensive research. This research includes a clear
research question, background/context, motivation, objectives, at least one qualitative method and
one quantitative method, the use of both planning and reflection questions from lectures (week 2 and
3) in each of your methods, a tangible outcome- report, movie, book, garments, workshops, proposals,
business models, and concluding thoughts. As you reflect on your research as a whole- what has
occurred and what have you learned? What can you contribute to the field of design, industry,
academic research, etc? What do you intend to do next?
Your group will be using your approved research proposal as the plan for the next three weeks. You will
have opportunities to use class time for instructor and peer support. You may schedule times to use
the class as your research participants or for peer feedback (similar to our homework and peer review
discussions).

This section is where you include all of your documentation for your research actions. Think about
the documentation we've used all term- there are questions you have answered while planning your

resulted in new questions, conclusions, or further plans for research. Use this section to share with a
reader your process. (500+ words for each method)

Responses to reflection questions
Final Outcomes- results, conclusions, reflections, etc. (10pts)
This section is where you detail the final outcomes of your research. What were you able to learn,
accomplish, or discover? What worked? What didn't work? What information can you now contribute
to the field as a whole? It is important that formal research contributes knowledge to others. (500+
words)
Include the following in your Final Outcomes:
Key ideas of your research- this can be changing participant values, business obstacles and
solutions, observations about different research methods, participant behaviors and idiosyncrasies,
the role of a researcher in specific types of research or settings, being an insider vs an outsider, etc.
These are the Big Ideas that your reader can take away from your research.
Conclusions and reflections- these are about your research project as a whole. Where did you start
out? Where did you end up? What changed throughout your research? What didn't? What was
difficult and what was easy? What is still missing?
"What's next?"- how can or should this research move forward? Will you continue this research?
How can others continue the research? What are ideas and questions that you weren't able to
explore in such a short time period? What questions and ideas still need to be addressed?
Point Distribution (out of 30): Introduction- 5pts, Methods- 15pts, Conclusions- 10pts/nFinal Research Presentation

your research actions, images, maps, analytics, your key ideas, and the outcomes of your research.
Take time to put together a visual and engaging presentation- though no need to be anxious about it!
