For this assignment, student will conduct a study that is heavily used in psychology and criminology. To properly complete this study, students must read and follow the reading "structured Observation" and the link which provides step-by-step instructions. Student will be graded in part by how well they can interpret instructions based in a reading.

The topic that I choose for research study is the “racial discrimination with black Americans in public places”. It is observed and claimed by many studies that a racial discriminatory attitude is still followed in America against black people. Therefore, I chose to observe this behaviour in public places to prove my hypothesis that is “Black Americans are discriminated at public places” and to understand what prejudices they have in their mind for that behaviour. The place that I chose, is a Coffee Shop run by White American couple. Since it is very famous and receives good crowd as it is located in the commercial area. Many people visit it on a daily basis. The method I choose to use, is the direct observation/structured observation/participant observation method in which I went directly to a coffee shop to observe the situation in order to remain as objective as I can in my study and also to prevent any biases from the story tellers. The particular behaviour that I observed was about conduct and treatment by coffee shop owners, workers and other white visitors with the Black American visitors. Things that I noticed were as follows. How they are greeting black Americans against their counter parts “white Americans”? How much time is being taken to serve them against the counter parts? At which seat they are made to sit? Facial expressions of white people when they look at black people? What type of utensils they are being served beverage in? Is their any difference between them. How do other visitors behave with black visitors? How much are they charged? Are they being charged extra than white people? At what time do black Americans mostly visit the coffee shop? How do blacks react to such actions? I noticed that there was some kind of behavioral difference in the treatment with black Americans and white Americans. The tone of speaking was a little straight and harsh for black Americans in fact, sometimes they will not greet at all. When any black person used to visit the coffee shop he or she was made to sit for a longer period and first, white people were served at the earliest. Mostly they will be offered the back seat or the side seat and white people were most often offered the front seat. The facial expressions were a bit different while talking to black Americans more kind of negative or disinterested kind of behaviour was shown. On the other hand, there was more comfortable treatment given to White Americans. There was no such kind of difference in utensils in which the beverage was being served to people of colour. The behaviour of other white visitors was also supporting the hypothesis as same kind of expression and disregard was observed among them against black people. In fact, one incident took place that proved to be in favour of the hypothesis, so much so that, very less doubts remain left. The incident was that, a neck piece was lost which belonged to a white lady from upper class background. What happened next was that, without any evidence or reason the black lady sitting on the another table was questioned, her hand purse was checked as if it was perceived by those people that the black lady must have been stolen the neck piece. It showed the prejudices and behavioral biases among them against black Americans. Although charges of the coffee were not different and kept same for both black and white Americans but this was again not the part of behaviour but a professional matter. Black people mostly visit the coffee shop in the morning or in the evening. After noticing and observing all these things continuously for a month and that incident of stealing, my hypothesis was proved right that there are some racial biases and prejudices among white people against black Americans. It is witnessed at public places, the black Americans reacted to such things with fear, anxiety and sometimes with retaliation. I also observed that after that stealing incident happened, the number of black people visiting that coffee shop decreased further, this might be because of the fear and also the sense of disrespect that they might felt at the coffee shop as a community.
