Importance of mental health in our life

Hello, everyone! Tell me what is the most important thing in life to be happy. I know some of you might be thinking that it is about money or maybe love. There are many things that you might think are very important to you. But, for me, it has always been my mental health. I know that I can have loads of money or love from all the people of the world, but I still might not be happy because of my mental health condition. Mental health is the key to happiness.

However, not many people identify with it and they struggle with several mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, schizophrenia, etc. According to a study, “one in five adults in America, that is nearly 43.8 million people, experience mental illness” (Grover et al., 2020). It accounts for almost 18.5% of the total population of the United States. Because of poor mental health, people can even take the path of suicide. I want you all to understand the importance of mental health and act accordingly.

Firstly, mental health affects physical health. They are very closely related to each other. For instance, depression can lead to suicidal ideations and even suicidal attempts. Because of stress, people face frequent sickness. It can affect your heart,  muscles, blood vessels, and other systems as well. Mental illness also affects our inability to cope (Gislason et al., 2021). That is why people use alcohol and drugs as coping mechanisms. Thus, poor mental health affects our physical well-being.

Secondly, people with good mental health generally live happier life. Good mental health will result in increased self-esteem. It will help you to make better decisions, have a better societal life, and manage emotions. These people generally have better performance in the office because they stay productive and efficient all the time. Their mind is clear and they can brainstorm new ideas better. It also improves your sex life (Hsieh et al., 2018).

We see many people around us who struggle with mental health diseases that I mentioned earlier. Better mental health can stop those diseases from touching you. As a result, you will live a happy and tension-free life. That is why one needs to take mental health seriously and do certain things that will keep their mental health as it should be. But, it is easier said than done. The good news is that you can take precautionary steps to stay ahead of it beforehand. One thing that you can do is to interact with people more by living a social life. It can not be possible with "social media sites”. Regularly interacting with people such as friends and family will improve your mental well-being. Another thing that you can do is to physically exercise (Soga et al., 2021). Staying fit will help you to keep your mind fresh. Also, doing meditation after your busy work day in the office will make you calm and collected. You will get extra energy to keep moving.
