There are four stages in the natural history of disease and they include the stage of susceptibility,

stage of pre-symptomatic disease, stage of clinical disease and stage of recovery or disability.

Adolescent pregnancy is not an infectious disease but those who engage in risky behaviors or

unprotected sex can be susceptible to getting pregnant and in the clinical stage, the teen becomes

pregnant. Opportunities for teen pregnancy prevention is important and prevention strategies

include health promotion focused on determinants, clinical prevention to reduce modifiable risk

factors, case finding, screening, and addressing functional outcomes relevant to quality of life

(White, 2020).

The epidemiological triangle is the who, what and where of a disease and include the

host, the agent and the environment. The host in teen pregnancy would be the adolescent female

susceptible to becoming pregnant. Adolescence is a crucial and transitional stage in life, from

childhood to adulthood that is characterized by curiosity and adventures (Okah et al., 2023) often

associated with risk-taking (premarital sex) and this would be the agent in the epidemiological

triangle. The environment for teen pregnancy can consist of the community, economic and

environment in which a teen lives in, their access to health care and those engaging in risky

behaviors.

Evidence suggests that declines in teen pregnancy are due to more teens abstaining from

sexual activity, and more teens who are sexually active using birth control than in previous years

(CDC, 2021). By developing and improving sexual health education for prevention of teenage

pregnancy and the use of contraceptives are factors that can continue to help prevent teen

pregnancy.
