When we swiftly and unconsciously analyse the information in the environment around us, this is called automatic information processing. Controlled information processing, in contrast, is the processing of information with conscious thought and analysis. Such automatic views are thought to be unplanned, spontaneous reactions that target specific racial and ethnic groups. Automatic stereotyping is the unintentional activation of frequently unfavourable ideas about a specific group of individuals. Instinctive bias is an unconscious and automatic first impression of a person or group. Change is more likely when people think deliberately about stereotypes, biases, and discrimination. There is no universal method for categorising the various types of change interventions, but bias reduction ideas can be divided into two categories.The first is the intergroup interaction hypothesis, which contends that membership in other groups can lessen prejudice and encourage inclusion. The second consists of ideas that emphasise exposure to knowledge about other groups, which challenges and alters how individuals perceive other groups (through education and re-education, or the media, for example).
