Assuming the conduit in the figure is a trapezoidal closed PVC culvert with bottom width
of 8.5' and side slopes of 4.5 horizontal to 2' vertical, and that the flow carried must be
the same as in Question 1:
a) Determine the critical depth of the flow.
b) Using the Froude number, determine the whether the flow in the channel is
supercritical or subcritical if the depth of flow is 2".
c) Determine the normal depth of flow based on Manning's equation.
d) Determine the "critical slope" at which this channel will contain the critical depth
for a flow of 500 cfs.
e) If a gate in the reservoir at the entrance to the channel is lifted to a height of 1.5
feet above the bottom of the channel, determine the discharge through the gate.
(Assume a gate coeff. of 0.72.)
f) For the gate in part (e), determine the height and nature of the hydraulic jump of
the flow emerging from the gate. (Hint: take the height of the gate to be D₁.)
