Question

Question 5. In the mechanism shown in Fig. 5, each of the two wheels has a mass of 40 kg and a centroidal radius of gyration of 120 mm. Each link

OB has a mass of 15 kg and may be treated as a slender bar. The 10-kg collar at B slides on the fixed vertical shaft with a negligible friction. The spring has a stiffness k = 25 kN/m and is contacted by the bottom of the collar when the links reach the horizontal position. If the collar is released from rest at the position 8 = 45 degrees and the friction is sufficient to prevent the wheels from slipping (i.e. the wheels roll without sliding on the horizontal surface), determine (a) the velocity of the collar vs as it first strikes the spring, (b) the maximum deflection of the spring, and (c) discuss what happens to the Vs and maximum spring deflection if the wheels roll with slipping and the spring stiffness has been doubled.
