Question

Question 5 of 8 (LO1 – 6 marks, LO2 – 9 marks; total for Question 5: 15 marks) Consider a horizontal table with a smooth light pulley at its edge,

and two boxes connected by a light inextensible string (as considered in a lecture): Now, assume that the box of mass 6 kg is replaced by a box of mass 9.8 kg, and the box of mass 4 kg is replaced by a box of mass 7.8 kg; also assume that the coefficient of sliding friction is u = 0.36 (a) Determine the acceleration of the boxes; (b) Determine the tension in the string; (c) What is the minimal mass that would need to replace 9.8 kg in order for boxes to stop moving?
