text. This section of Chapter 1 describes how psychology is driven to conduct research in
scientific way. The section also discusses the characteristics of science, the assumptions of
science, and the goals of science. While many of these items are intuitive, it is often interesting to
consider that all of science adheres to these characteristics, assumptions, and goals. The section
also details that science deals with observable measures and objective findings. Therefore, there
are items that are outside of the realm of science (for example the text identifies "the will of God"
as an item that cannot be considered scientific in nature as it cannot be measured or tested; page
25). This separation of science from non-testable concepts like those of a spiritual nature. In our
culture this often creates a tension where "science" is pitted against "religion" and rational minds
choose science over religion. It is important to note here that while science is in constant pursuit
of truth, science ultimately boils down to a system of belief as well. All scientific research has
limitations and pitfalls. Furthermore, we cannot see all scientific research firsthand and must
accept the reports of scientists as truth.
