For me, the opportunity to collaborate and form or champion a new policy or bill was not thought of outside of the hospital. I new very little about organizations such as the Florida Board of Nursing versus the National Board of Nurses and so forth. To think that there were pathways for an ordinary nurse to make an impact on a new bill or policy was not at the forefront of my thinking until taking this course. I enjoy collaborating with my colleagues and management to create new or enhanced policies in the workplace. While working with the Veterans Administration I was the Chair of the Unit Based Council, and I was also selected by a member of the management team to revamp the current admission process and streamline it to be easily understood by current employees as well as new employees so that they could follow step by step the admission process and complete an admission in its entirety without the need for further instruction. (i) After researching Congress.Gov., the two areas I feel nurses would have the greatest opportunity to impact policy making would be by becoming a board member on the Florida Board of Nursing or the Nursing Board for the state in which they live. I also believe a great opportunity would be by joining a nursing organization such as the Amer Nurse Association or the American Association of Cancel ÃO RESET Nurse Association or the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Within these organizations nurses can collaborate not only with other nurses but colleagues in multiple sects of policy making to enact bills or laws that advocate for patients who otherwise do not have a voice in the political arena. Ø Adjust The Florida Board of Nursing currently has 2 open seats, one for an LPN and one for a Consumer. To become a member, you simply apply on the Governor of Florida website and if selected you are appointed by the Governor and the confirmed by the Senate (Congress. Gov., 2023). To become a member of the ANA or the AANP you simply visit their website and follow the instructions related to becoming a member and pay the membership fee. With the nursing associations you can collaborate with colleagues all over the world and share current policies and proposed policies or even policies currently in place in one region which you would like to see in your region (ANA,2023).
