Question

Take a box of volume V. The box is prepared such that it contains two different monatomic ideal gases, with particle masses ma and mB, initially separated by a partition.

Each gas has the same number of particles, N, is at the same temperature, T, and initially occupies exactly half the box. a) Using the Sackur-Tetrode equation, calculate the change in entropy of the total system(including both gases) when the partition separating the gases is removed. Express your answer in terms of any of the following: ,T, ma, mB, N, and any fundamental constants. b) If the box had instead been prepared with the same monatomic ideal gas on both sides of the partition, would your answer in part b) have changed? If so, show or explain what would have changed in your work for part b) and what the new value for the change in entropy would be.
