I was hired as a janitor at a large office building in Boston, Massachusetts. The job description was clear: clean the bathrooms, empty the trash, and sweep and mop the floors. It seemed simple enough. However, this job was far more difficult than it appeared on paper. The office building was enormous; I walked over three miles every day just to complete my tasks. Even though I had a broom in one hand and a mop in the other, I still had to do all of this while carrying around my cleaning supplies—and those were heavy! The bathrooms were particularly challenging because they were so dirty. If there wasn't any toilet paper or soap left in one of them, then I had to go find some before starting my work. Once these supplies were located, I would need to sanitize them before using them again—which meant putting them through multiple cycles of hot water and soap! This process took about 30 minutes each time it was done because we needed to ensure that everything was thoroughly cleaned before use again." The worst part about this job was that it paid very little, and that no one else would hire me because they all thought I was too inexperienced. So every day after work (and sometimes before), I would stop by a nearby store and buy everything from toilet paper to cleaning chemicals for which I would be reimbursed by my employers. This meant that instead of being able to save money for school or other expenses like most people do when working full-time jobs, my pay checks went toward paying for things like soap and toilet paper because they weren't provided for me by my employers! I also had to pay for my own gas and car maintenance costs since the company didn't reimburse those expenses either. The job was so stressful and underpaid that at times it felt like my employer was taking advantage of me—but they were the only ones hiring at the time, so what choice did I have? I finally got out of this job, but it wasn't easy. I had no savings left over from either of my jobs that could help me pay rent or buy groceries while searching for something new.
