According to W.E.B. Du Bois in “Damnation of Women'' the present day women are burdened under systematic patriarchal structure where they face oppression at pluri-dimnesional levels. The author states that , “The present mincing horror at free womanhood must pass if we are ever to be rid of the bestiality of free manhood; not by guarding the weak in weakness do we gain strength, but by making weakness free and strong ” ( Dillion, 2020). This exists in both covert and overt form and affects all classes of women especially women of color. The perception that women are weak and their place is within the four walls of the house is still prevalent in society. They are still seen as baby making machines. Their access to quality education , health services is still plagued by toxic masculine notions that dictate our society. The vicious cycle of poverty affects them both because their financial socio-economic independence is always restricted in one way or another. Women not only suffer in the field of education or employment but this restriction also expands to their decision making capabilities. The underrepresentation of women in decision making bodies is a clear cut example of this. The above quotation thus clearly highlights that the meaning of the word ‘freedom’ is different for both men and women and how it is biased towards women leading to exploitation. The author Alfonsino Storni in the literary piece ‘ She- wolf’ defies and challenges the traditional ideas and norms of patriarchy. She states that , “ I have a son, fruit of love, of a lawless love, For I couldn't be like the others, another ox With its neck in a yoke; I hold my proud head high! I plow through the underbrush with my own hands” (Dillion, 2020). As we know women in the past and in the present societal system have been victims of patriarchy. Their freedom was limited by men. The author here fights against the orthodox nature of the patriarchal system with her brilliance of literature. Having a son without marriage is often seen as a sin which the author has cleverly used in a sentence to break away from the traditional chains of the society. Women are often taught to behave in a certain way in the society and their freedom is restricted through both covert and overt sanctions. It is very similar to an ox tied to a plough. In contrast, the author cherishes the freedom she has gained by breaking away from the chains of the society. She challenges the various stereotypes of the society through her writing.
