Etiology: Theory and Conceptualization

0

The biopsychosocial model has emerged as a compelling approach to conceptualizing

and treating mental illness. However, as with all theories, it has also received its share

of criticism. Evaluate the strengths and limitations of the biopsychosocial model.

Explain the clinical circumstances in which the biopsychosocial model might be

indicated and effectively applied, and, the clinical circumstances in which this model

might be contraindicated and inapplicable. Provide an example of each circumstance.

Poor emotional regulation represents a significant factor for the development of mental

disorders. Top-down theories of emotions explain psychopathology as dys-regulation of

perceptual/cognitive processing. Bottom-up theories of emotions explain

psychopathology as dis-regulation of sensory/somatic processing. Compare and

contrast these approaches and examine their importance for understanding

psychopathology.

Psychological theories help us to conceptualize how mental illness can arise. Select a

specific mental disorder, such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, substance use

disorder, eating disorder, one of the paraphilias, one of the personality disorders, etc. -

your choice. Then, select any two theories - your choice to explain the presumptive

etiology behind the disorder. The theories should be distinctive from one another (e.g.,

psychodynamic, post-modern, humanistic/existential, cognitive-behavioural, family

systems, and biopsychosocial, etc.).

The biopsychosocial model is a broad view that attributes disease outcome to the intricate,

variable interaction of biological factors (genetic, biochemical), psychological factors (mood,

personality, behaviour), and social factors (cultural, familial, socioeconomic, medical). This

model is instrumental in mental health, including disorders like social anxiety and avoidant

personality disorder. Indication and Application: The biopsychosocial model can be effectively

applied in the case of social anxiety disorder. For instance, a person may have a genetic

predisposition to anxiety disorders (biological), which could be triggered by a traumatic social

event such as bullying (social), leading to the development of social anxiety. The person's

individual coping mechanisms and cognitive processes (psychological) could further

exacerbate or mitigate the disorder. Treatment, therefore, would involve medication to manage

the biological aspects, cognitive-behavioural therapy to address the psychological aspects and

social interventions such as support groups or family therapy. Contraindication and

Inapplicability: However, there may be clinical circumstances where the biopsychosocial model

might be contraindicated or less applicable. For example, in the case of a severe mental illness

like schizophrenia, while there are undoubtedly psychological and social components, the

biological component is often so vital that it overshadows the others. The disorder is often

primarily managed with medication, and while psychological and social interventions can be

supportive, they are unlikely to be effective without biological intervention. In such cases, a

more biologically-focused model may be more appropriate. It is important to note that the

applicability of the biopsychosocial model can vary greatly depending on the individual and the

specific circumstances. It is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and it is crucial to consider the

unique combination of biological, psychological, and social factors contributing to each

individual's health.
