Question

1.

The two tanks below have equivalent volumes and are completely isolated from

the surroundings. A diatomic perfect gas is initially confined in tank A at an absolute

pressure of 1.013 MPa and a temperature of 21.1°C. Valve C is initially closed and tank B

is completely evacuated. Valve C is opened just until the pressure in the two tanks is

equalized, and then the valve is closed. Determine the final temperature and pressure in

each tank. Assume no heat transfer between tank A and tank B. (4.3 from T&K)

solution: PA,final = PB,final = 0.507 MPa, TA,final = -31.8°C, TB,final = 103.6°C
