Question

1.(a)Consider Figure 1(a) below (in color for clarity). Each curve S, through S, represents a three dimensional surface and each circle q, through q, represents a charge. (i)Find an expression

for the electric flux through each surface (S, S, and S). (ii)If q=4=4=3 uC and q2=q4=-2 uC, evaluate the flux through each surface. (b)Consider Figure 1(b) above. A 3D rectangular surface with sides of length a (along the x direction), b (along the y direction), and e (along the z direction) sits with its back left corner at the origin and its sides aligned with the axes. The surface lies in a region of electric field given by \vec{E}=E_{0x}\hat{x}+E_{0y}\hat{y} Note that the field is uniform and has no component along the z direction. (i)Find expressions for the electric flux through each face of the surface (left, where x 0;right, where x a; top, where y b; bottom, where y 0; front, where z = e; and back, where z 0). (ii)Use your results in (i) to find the total flux through the closed surface. (iii)How much net charge is inside the surface? Explain using your answer from (ii).
