Question

2) Consider some aspects of the hydrophobic effect

a) Studies on the associations between planar aromatic molecules show an

approximately linear relationship between the interaction energy and their mutual

contact surface area with slope 64 dyn cm¹, very close to the macroscopic

surface tension of water (72 dyn cm ¹). Explain why this makes sense physically.

b) The presence of certain salts in the aqueous solution causes this figure to

change in value. Give two reasons to explain why.

3

c) Why are solvophobic effects usually far less significant in organic solvents

compared to water?
