2. Soap Operas-Media Using your knowledge of day and/or nighttime soap operas (whether you watch them or not), discuss the following: a. Who are the main characters and what is their social position in the world? What are their physical characteristics? b. What are some of the major themes of these programs, and why are these stressed, to the exclusion of others? Hint: you might discussion particular sets of values pertaining to the family, love, responsibility to the community, self-fulfillment, and criteria for success, attainment of happiness, or any other such items. c. To what extent, if any, are you able to identify with the characters or the themes? What are lessons, morals imparted? d. How would you explain the popularity of soap operas? Who watches them? Why?
